Doughtie, Shirley Ann
Doughtie, Shirley Ann (Wilson), 93, of Rocky Hill passed away Monday, February 15, 2021. She was born on February 24, 1927 in Hartford, CT to the late Ernest G. Wilson, Sr. and Carolyn (Bryant)Rivera. She was raised in Wethersfield, CT and lived in the City of Hartford for over 20 years before settling in Rocky Hill for the past 40+ years. Shirley was a dedicated matriarch who valued family above all else, sharing and hosting family gatherings until the pandemic. She retired from the Records Department of Travelers Insurance Company after 20 years of service. Shirley was a faithful parishioner at The Church of the Good Shepherd for over 60 years and the oldest member until her passing. She is fondly remembered for serving on the Vestry and as a Junior Warden. She was known for always being on time, often with her famous pumpkin cake in hand and imparting her prodigious historical memory to the younger generation while enjoying coffee hour after Sunday service. She was a lifetime member of the Union of Black Episcopalians (UBE). Our Mother Grandmother and Great Grandmother's unconditional love and fierce defense of family are legendary. She greatly enjoyed staying informed and discussing current events and the history of her much loved old Wethersfield. She also took pleasure in listening to music, reading and being in touch with a wide range of extended family and close friends. Her favorite season was Fall, although she was a fan of a “real New England winter”. She was predeceased by her husband Willie D. Doughtie, to whom she was married for 58 years. Shirley is survived by her large and loving family, including her children: Edward of Hartford, Glenda and her husband, Paul Bongiovanni of Newington, Robert and his wife, Lisa Lubell of Bronx, NY, James and his wife, Kim of Enfield and Carolyn of Newington. She also leaves behind her grandchildren: Peter and his wife, Wendy, Malika, Athena, and Cameron and his wife, Christina. Shirley was blessed with four beloved great grandchildren as well: Rosie, Raina, Delilah and Forest. She is also survived by her brother, Ernest G. Wilson, Jr. of Merritt Island, FL.
