I’m greatly dismayed by Gov. Ned Lamont’s decision to base the vaccine rollout solely on age. Dismayed but not surprised. I write this as a healthy, Gen X parent who is fortunate to work from home. I would have been at the bottom of any rational rollout system, and deservedly so. But my wife, a front-line worker, and so many others like her, are not so fortunate. It’s no secret that the middleaged enjoy far better COVID-19 outcomes, but for a working parent to become seriously ill, even for a few weeks, sets off a disastrous chain reaction.

They’re wearing all the hats: parent, breadwinner, caretaker to elderly parents, homeschool teacher. But we’ve long prioritized old lives over young lives, haven’t we? Where were the prolonged school closures for the children taken by gun violence? We shrug off climate change, the disappearance of pensions, obscene student debt, and myriad other problems that disproportionately impact the younger generation. You’ve abandoned us, Gov. Lamont. Now I’m abandoning you.
