UConn hockey snaps skid with 4-2 win over Maine

Ryan Tverberg and Adam Karashik each had a goal and an assist to help the UConn men’s hockey team snap a four-game losing streak with a 4-2 Hockey East win over Maine on Saturday at the Freitas Ice Forum in Storrs.

Carter Berger gave the Huskies (9-10-2) the lead early with his first goal of the season at 14:43 of the first period. Karashik then gave UConn a 2-0 lead at 9:09 of the second.

Maine, which defeated UConn 6-4 on Friday, came back as Adam Dawe scored a pair of second-period power-play goals, the first at 18:23 and the second just 1:36 later.

Tverberg finally broke through in the third with the game-winner at 17:44. Marc Gatcomb then added an insurance goal with just a second remaining.

Tomas Vomacka had 24 saves in goal for the Huskies, while Victor Ostman had 43 for the Black Bears.

Quinnipiac 3, St. Lawrence 2: At Canton, N.Y., Peter DiLberator­e scored the game-winning goal at 8:22 of the third period as the 12th-ranked Bobcats extended their unbeaten streak to seven games with the ECAC win.

Ethan de Jong and Odeen Tufto scored first-period goals for Quinnipiac (16-54, 9-3-4), de Jong’s just 21 seconds into the game.

Michael Lombardi had two assists for the Bobcats, and Keith Petruzzell­i 29 saves in goal.

Women’s basketball

Niagara 78, Quinnipiac 69: At Niagara, N.Y., Mikala Morris had 23 points and 12 rebounds in a losing effort as the Bobcats dropped the regular-season-ending game. Quinnipiac will next play as the No. 2 seed in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference tournament. Mackenzie DeWees added 11 points and seven rebounds for Quinnipiac (13-7, 11-5 MAAC). Angel Parker had 23 for Niagara.

Men’s soccer

Providence 2, UConn 0: At Storrs, Rimi Olatunji made two saves as the Friars shut out the Huskies for the Big East Conference win. Paulo Lima scored at 12:25 of the first half and Gevork Diarbian at 60:56 of the second for the game’s only offense. Jahmali Waite had five saves in goal for the Huskies (1-1, 0-1).

Baseball

Southern Miss 7, UConn 6: At Hattiesbur­g, Miss., the Huskies left the potential tying run on third in the eighth inning after closing the gap with a three-run rally before dropping their third straight. David Langer had three hits and an RBI for UConn (1-3), while Reggie Crawford added two hits and two RBI and Pat Winkel two RBI. Joe Simeone was the starter and loser for the Huskies, going 3 ⅓ innings, allowing four hits and five runs, four earned.
