Cowan Everett Jones, Jr., formerly of Glastonbury, CT died Friday, April 23, 2021 at Farmington Station assisted living in Farmington, CT. Cowan was born December 31, 1924, in Newport, RI, to the late Cowan, Sr and Isabelle (Thompson) Jones. He spent his youth in Newport, Haiti, Florida, Georgia and Washington, D.C. Cowan attended the V-12 program at Cornell, graduated from RPI and earned his Naval Construction and Engineering graduate degree from MIT. He served his country honorably for thirteen years as a Lieutenant in the US Navy, participating in the Operation Highjump expedition to Antarctica with Adm. Richard Byrd, and later directing part of the refurbishment of the USS Nautilus. Cowan retired from The Travelers, having also worked at United Technologies Research Laboratory. He loved naval history and was an avid reader. Cowan also loved sailing and had been a dedicated volunteer at Mystic Seaport.
Cowan is survived by his daughter, Nancy Whitehead and her husband Gerry Whitehead of Farmington, CT, special cousin Joan Boghossian, and nephew Russell Bentley. Cowan was predeceased by his wife Lois (Wolf) Jones, his sister Georgia Bentley and special nephew John Rock.
The Paul A. Shaker Funeral Home, 764 Farmington Ave., New Britain, CT has charge of arrangements. There are no calling hours. Interment will be at the convenience of the family. Memorial donations may be made to the Farmington Valley Visiting Nurses Association or the Mystic Seaport Museum.
