Florence G. McMahon, 85, recently of Old Lyme CT (formerly of Newington CT and Needham MA) died peacefully in hospice care after a brief illness on Tuesday April 27th. Flo was born on September 30, 1935, the daughter of the late Chester and Mary Goralski. She grew up in Rocky Hill CT. She graduated from Mount Saint Joseph Academy in 1953 and UCONN in 1957. She married her beloved husband Walt McMahon in 1959. They settled in Newington where they lived together for 50 years until Walt passed away in 2010. Flo remained in Newington for a short time moving to Needham MA to be closer to her children and grandchild­ren. Two years ago, she moved to Old Lyme. Flo was a retired teacher- teaching in Newington for 22 years- at John Patterson, Ruth Chaffee, and John Wallace. She is survived by her daughter Karen Strauss and her husband Greg of Needham, MA; her son Kevin McMahon and his wife Tricia of Westwood, MA; her five grandchild­ren: Tim Strauss, Molly McMahon, Katelyn Strauss, Sarah McMahon, and Melissa Strauss; her sister Lois Arzolitis; and sister-in-law Lee McMahon. Flo was a loving wife, mother, grandmothe­r, and friend who will be remembered as a woman who loved her family, friends, the beach, the Red Sox, the UCONN Women's basketball team, puzzles, and new adventures.

Funeral services will be held at 10 AM on Tuesday May 18th at the Annunciati­on Parish at St. Mary's Church, 626 Willard Ave; Newington, CT. Burial will be in West Meadow Cemetery, Newington. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the “Friends of the Lucy Robbins / Welles Library” Lucy Robbins Welles Library, 100 Garfield Street, Newington, CT 06111.
