Mary Brophy Pfau, 72, of Canton, beloved wife of Paul Frederic Pfau, passed away peacefully on Friday April 23, 2021 at Hartford Hospital, surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Hartford, CT on May 28, 1948 to the late Joseph A. and Marion P. (Pease) Brophy. Mary was educated in Hartford Schools and graduated with honors from Bulkeley High School. While in high school, Mary lost both of her parents and was cared for by her two loving sisters, JoAnn Collins and Nancy Daly, both of whom predeceased Mary. Mary went on to receive her Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing from St. Anselm College. She worked for many years as a Visiting Nurse for VNA Health Care before retiring in 2003. Mary and Paul met in college at St. Anselm and were married in December of 1969. Paul's late parents, Frederic and Doris Pfau, always loved Mary as their own daughter. Mary and Paul resided in Glastonbury for 25 years and had a summer home in Old Lyme. They moved to Canton in 2005. Mary was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She especially loved spending time with her family and friends. Watching her grandchildren's sporting events brought her immense joy, as did family vacations in Stowe, walks in the sand along the beach in Sound View, a glass of Chardonnay on her deck with family and friends, and cheering on the UConn women's basketball team. Mary was a dedicated volunteer at the Canton Food Bank and a communicant of St. Patrick's Church in Collinsville. Mary is survived by her husband, Paul Pfau of Canton; her son, Kevin Frederic Pfau of North Windham; her daughter and future son-in-law, Karen B. Mendes and Todd Kroll of Simsbury; her grandchildren, Toby, Mckenna and Davy; and many beloved nieces and nephews. Mary was a caretaker through and through, always thinking of others and wanting to help them during difficult times. Cancer took her much too quickly, and even at the end of her life, Mary was still the nurturer, trying to comfort her loved ones and asking that they say goodbye and send her love to her extended family and many friends in Wethersfield, Glastonbury, Old Lyme and Canton. Mary and her family would also like to thank the dedicated doctors and nurses on the Oncology and Hospice teams at Hartford Hospital. Words cannot express how much Mary will be missed. Mary's family will receive friends on Tuesday, May 4, 2021 from 4-6PM at Carmon Funeral Home & Family Center, 301 Country Club Road, Avon, CT 06001. No funeral or memorial service is immediately planned. The family will notify loved ones in the future when a service is scheduled. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mary's memory may be made to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, https://www.pancan.org/honormemorial-gifts/, 1500 Rosecrans Avenue, Suite 200, Manhattan Beach, CA 90266 or St. Anslem College of Nursing, 100 Saint Anselm Drive #1738 Manchester, NH 03102-1310.
