Top 10 PGA Tour players to watch at this year’s Travelers Championship

- By Mike Mavredakis Hartford Courant

Here are the top 10 players to watch in the 70th iteration of the PGA Tour’s stop in Connecticut.

Dustin Johnson

Johnson took home the 2020 $1.2 million winner’s purse by a one-stroke margin over second-place finisher and 2014 winner Kevin Streelman. He is currently ranked No. 13 in the PGA’s FedExCup standings, with 1,270 points this season. Johnson took home the illustrious green jacket at the Masters in November, but he has cooled as of late.

Phil Mickelson

Speaking of Mickelson, the fan favorite commited to playing in his third straight Travelers. The Hall of Famer has won it two times prior, back in 2001 and 2002 when it was still called the Canon Greater Hartford Open. Now 50, Mickelson is still playing well, winning his eighth major at the PGA Championship on May 23.

Bubba Watson

Watson, a 12-time winner on the PGA Tour, is looking to join Bill Casper as a four-time winner of this event. He’s made 14 starts at the Travelers Championship, earning his first PGA Tour win at TPC River Highlands on a sudden-death playoff in 2010, then winning again in 2015 and 2018.

Bryson Dechambeau

Dechambeau has been in the top 10 at the Travelers in each of the last three years. He finished tied for sixth last year, was eighth in 2019 and ninth in 2018. He’s currently ranked No. 2 in the FedExCup standings, 178 points short of Patrick Cantlay.

Brooks Koepka

While Koepka does not have the winning history at Travelers Championship, he does have a major storyline to follow with his well-documented feud with Dechambeau. Koepka, a four-time major winner, is currently ranked No. 18 and has two top-two finishes in his last five events.

Patrick Cantlay

Cantlay, the current leader in the FedExCup standings right now, was having a bit of a rough go of it lately. He had not made the cut in three of five straight events heading into June, but then he stepped up and won the Memorial Tournament on June 6. Cantlay, 29, made a splash at the Travelers as a teenager in 2011, shooting a 60, the lowest score by an amateur in PGA Tour history.

Patrick Reed

Reed, a green jacket winner at the 2018 Masters, will play in his 10th consecutive in the Travelers Championship. The No. 17-ranked golfer in the world, Reed has not missed a Travelers since his first year on the Tour in 2011. His highest ever finish came in 2017 when he tied for fifth.

Abraham Ancer

Ancer has had a productive season thus far, currently ranked No. 15 in the FedExCup. He secured a top-10 finish in the first three May PGA Tour events, including a second-place finish at the Wells Fargo Championship.

Keegan Bradley

The Vermont native has had two top-10 finishers at the Travelers recently in 2019 (tied for second) and 2017 (tied for eighth). Bradley, 34, who won the PGA Championship as a rookie in 2011, has also finished under par in eight straight competitions heading into the Memorial Tournament but did not make the cut there.

Marc Leishman

Like Watson, Leishman earned his first PGA Tour win in Hartford, by putting together a 8-under final round in 2012. Leishman has one win on the year, finishing first in the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, and landed tied for fifth at the Masters in April.
