- Please sign guestbook at courant.com/obituaries

Hugh Perkins Magoun, 81, died on June 1, 2021, with his son Derrick by his side after a belligerent battle with dementia. For many years he was an English teacher and library media specialist at New Milford High School, where he also coached tennis and refereed. He was extremely proud of his contributions at New Milford HS to the “high tech” research of the time, developing their audio-visual department and their periodical catalog. Hugh was happy to hand the reins over to his good friend Richard Kosier after 35 years. He was just as proud of beating the buses out the door on Fridays, racing to get to his beloved Vermont for weekends spent snowshoeing and skiing with his family. A great outdoorsman for all seasons, he also loved boating, waterskiing, gardening, feeding the birds, and golfing. He especially loved his time on the salt pond clamming and playing tennis with his

good friends, Wags, Gil, and Ray. After a long day outdoors, he would make great dinners for his family and enjoyed kicking back on his deck in Rhode Island or watching a good

movie. Always a family man, he welcomed the new members to his family including his much loved grandchildren, Conner, Logan, and Olivia, and kept the members of his first wife's family close until the end. He welcomed everyone with open arms and a good meal, making sure to cook things he knew that his guests would enjoy. He loved good music, good food, and reminiscing about his travels, especially his trip to California and

his cross-country trip with his childhood friend David Anderson. He cared deeply about animals and adored his dogs Perky, Bridget, Simon and Cali, calling them by numerous nicknames and talking to them like they might answer him back. You could always find him watching his beloved Yankees or the UConn Women's basketball team. He was the son of Eleanor A. Jackman and was adopted by his grandparents at birth. He will be missed dearly by his sons, Derrick and Dylan, his grandchildren, his daughter-in-law Kristen, his sister-in-law Sue Streeter and brother-in-law Dave Streeter, his half-sister Chris Anderson and half-brother Michael. He was predeceased by his first wife Ann Streeter, mother of his children, his father-in-law Ralph Streeter, his mother-in-law Janet Streeter, and his halfbrother Peter Jackman. He also leaves behind his former wife Kathleen Magoun and one of his favorite sparring partners, her mother Marge Balogh. In his spirit, tip your waitstaff generously or take a day off from work - actually make it two so they think you're really sick! He donated freely to Alley Cat Allies, Sierra Club, Guide Dogs for the Blind, and Boys Town. A warm thank you to the staff at the Glastonbury Brookdale Buckingham who lovingly cared for him, cajoled and joked with him over the last two and a half years. We admire your grace and generosity - we

couldn't have done it without you.
