Binghamton early misses no-hitter, defeats Yard Goats

Casey Golden prevented a tough season for the Hartford Yard Goats from getting a bit tougher.

The Yard Goats right fielder singled with one out in the ninth inning, breaking up a no-hitter, as Hartford lost to the Binghamton Rumble Ponies 6-0 in an Eastern League Northeast Division game on at Dunkin’ Donuts Park.

Cole Gordon started for Binghamton and went five innings with eight strikeouts before, leaving in a scoreless tie. Tommy Wilson relieved and picked up the win with two innings of no-hit relief. Eric Orze finished, allowing Golden’s single.

Starter Matt Dennis pitched five shutout innings for Hartford (24-52). Michael Baird took the loss in relief.

Local announceme­nts: The St. Paul High softball team is hosting a bus trip to Fenway Park Aug. 12 for a game between the Red Sox and the Tampa Bay Rays. Bus leaves at noon from St. Paul in Bristol. Price is $160 and includes bus trip, sandwich,

The Children’s Charities Tennis Classic will take place Aug. 7-8 at the New Britain High School tennis courts to benefit the Harper Autism Fund for the Hospital for Special Care Pediatric Autism Unit.
