Community embraces mask rule
Reading Eliza Fawcett’s “New Haven mask rule takes effect” [Page 1, Aug. 10], I was heartened by the common sense, leadership, and community awareness displayed by the political leaders, restaurant owners and citizens interviewed for the story. Gov. Ned Lamont’s and New Haven Mayor Justin Elicker’s actions reflect shared and effective balance of power between state and local governments: the governor recognizing that municipalities differ in their masking needs, and the mayor recognizing that New Haven’s needs warrant clear, immediate attention.
Peter Maniatis, Zoi’s restaurant owner, has also shown the kind of responsible, community-aware business practice that will earn him recognition and customer support.
The city’s first responders and staff at Yale have shown that appreciation — no doubt along with employees he has refused to lay off.
And kudos to Joe Fay, Justina Uwakwe, Eddie Chase, Samantha Yisehak and Nicole Allen, all from different walks of life, but sharing the beliefs and behaviors of responsible, intelligent and caring community members.
