Johnson, Carlton Fitzroy

Carlton Fitzroy Johnson, of Bloomfield, passed away peacefully on September 1, 2021, after a long illness. He was 82. The eldest of 18 siblings, Carlton was born on December 18, 1938, in St. Elizabeth, Jamaica, to parents Amanda Russell and Clifford

Johnson. He immigrated to America in 1970, initially residing in Hartford before eventually settling in Bloomfield in 1984. Carlton was employed in the steel industry for more than 25 years, retiring in 2003 from Bow Steel of Windsor. In 1980, he married his longtime love Daphne and together they nurtured a blended family of 10 children. Known as “Johnno” to his closest friends and affectionately referred to as “C” by his wife, Carlton was a gregarious friend whose home was always open to visitors. Even those who stopped by unannounced knew they could count on Carlton to be the consummate host, offering food, beverage, and boisterous conversations. A lover of sports, especially cricket, Carlton was a founder and an honorary member of the New Britain Social Club, having served as its business manager for many years. Carlton was predeceased by his parents; adoptive mother Francis Wilson; and sons Carl and Kirkland. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Daphne; children Junior Johnson, Judith Bruce (Leroy), Howard Johnson, Beverly “Patsy” Thompson, Marlin Johnson, Donovan Barnett (Ingrid), Courtney Johnson (Sharon), Charles Hudson (Aleeshia), Genene Morris (James), and Dave Johnson; sisters-in-law Eulalee Clauson and Winnifred Shelton; 10 brothers and 7 sisters; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and friends.

Relatives and friends may join the family for calling hours on Saturday, September 25, 2021 from 8:00 to 10:00 a.m. at The Lodge Community Chapel, 130 Deerfield Road, Windsor, CT.
