Toscano, Patrick Alan

-

Patrick Alan Toscano, 70, of New Hartford, beloved husband of Diane (Bessette) Toscano, passed away peacefully at home Friday, September 24th, 2021. Patrick was born to Navy parents, Mary Carpenter Toscano and Salvatore Nick Toscano in Portsmouth, VA on March 17, 1951. He was a transcontinental, transoceanic child, exploring both coasts and the Hawaiian Isles before settling with his family in California. His early years were marked by a passion for the

cowboy stories of the American West and a Herman Melville-esque love of the untamed ocean. As a young man he enlisted in the Coast Guard (1971–1974) and served on an ice breaker which took him to both poles. He trained as a rescue swimmer, diver and marine science technician. He met his future wife Diane while snorkeling with friends on the Connecticut shoreline. Patrick and Diane married in 1975 and moved to California so Patrick could pursue his interest in surveying and mapping and earn a BS degree in Geology from California State University at Northridge.

Upon return to Connecticut Patrick became a land surveyor. He worked for the City of Hartford and later for the City of New Britain. The mayor awarded his significant contributions to the City by declaring

January 10, 2001 as Patrick Alan Toscano Day. Patrick served on the CALS (CT Association of Land Surveyors)

Board of Directors. He was recognized by CALS as the 2000 Land Surveyor of the Year for his expertise and enthusiasm in enhancing the respect afforded to CALS as a professional institution. He taught surveying classes at Capitol Community College and Central Connecticut State University. He was a Fellow of the National Society of Professional Surveyors and he was an esteemed Contributing Editor of the Professional

Surveyor Magazine. He loved writing and was a passionate collector of books.

Patrick was an avid outdoorsman, hiking, fishing, hunting, canoeing… He spent much of his time with his family sharing his broad interests particularly in nature and books. He leaves behind his wife Diane Bessette

Toscano and his loving daughters Melissa O. Toscano of Washington, DC and Sarah K. Toscano of Savannah, GA, his siblings Christine T. Smith of Spokane, WA, Michael A. Toscano of Lawrence, KS, and Sarah T. Reed of Port Angeles, WA. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

A Memorial Celebration will be held in the near future. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Connecticut Association of Land Surveyors Memorial Scholarship Fund, www.ctsurveyors.org. Arrangements are being handled by The Ahern Funeral Homes, Inc., www.ahernfuneralhome.com
