Hartford Courant (Sunday)

Hayden Sr., David C.

- Please sign guestbook at courant.com/obituaries

Every morning, Dave would get his coffee and the day's Hartford Courant. The first section he always read was the Obituaries. He would say: “I want to make sure I'm not there.” I am so sorry, Dave. Bad News. Dave passed away on September 22, 2021. He had started his many battles with cancer in 2004. The last four years of his life he battled 4 continuous different cancers. Number 7 and 8 did him in. Dave's words to everyone were always: “DON'T SMOKE!!!” Dave was passionate about the people and things he loved. In his younger days he enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating, woodworking and almost to the end, gardening. Dave was a lineman for 44 years and was so proud to have worked for Stanley. If he met you for the first time in a working situation he would always give you a Stanley, Black & Decker yellow tape measure. Since the late 1960's Dave also had his own business, Dave's Services, which consisted of mowing, snow plowing and odd jobs. He could fix anything (but a computer!) Dave was also super proud to

have been a volunteer fireman for decades, making it to a rank of Deputy Chief. Dave was a friend of Bill's for over 30 years and inspired countless fellow travelers.

He was so grateful to them all. Dave never hesitated to help family, friends, neighbors his church family and his church, even when he was really too sick to do so. A deep desire to help others was instilled in him very early.

Dave leaves behind his adored wife, Caroline. They celebrated their wedding anniversary not only once a year but every month. They made it to a few months into their 15th year. Dave also leaves behind his beloved children, Mary, Dave and daughter-in-law Elizabeth and his lifelong friend and sister “Marty”. Also stepchildren, Nicole and Adam and nieces and cousins.

If the pandemic ever ends, a memorial service at East Granby Congregational Church will be planned. Until then, Dave would like you to consider making donations in his name to one of the following: 1) East Granby

Congregational Church, 9 Rainbow Road, East Granby, CT 06026, 2) American Cancer Society, check website for various types of giving and 3) Poquonock Volunteer Fire Department, Poquonock Avenue, Windsor CT 06095 or any other charity that speaks to your heart.

Dave was a big presence who can never be replaced. “Vaya con Dios”, sweetheart. Wait for me.
