Konover, Doris Marcus

-

Doris Marcus Konover, age 98, of Delray Beach, Florida, passed away on 10/8/2021. Doris was born in 1923, in Norwich, Connecticut. Her parents, Clara and Harry Marcus, owned and operated a local, kosher restaurant. Doris had four sisters and one brother and she enjoyed a wonderful early family life. However, in 1929, Doris's father died in a car accident and the family thereafter had a very difficult time during the depression.

Doris graduated from Norwich Free Academy

in 1941. After high school, Doris trained at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston, MA and graduated the School of Nursing in 1944, as a nurse-anesthetist. In 1945, she went into The United States Army Nurse

Corps. After the war was over, she was in charge of the OR on a ship bringing injured soldiers home from Europe. Then, from time at Camp Kilmer in New Jersey, she went to an Indiana Army Hospital for six months. This hospital was especially built for injured soldiers. She then transferred to Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, DC. After being honorably discharged as a First Lieutenant, Doris went back to Beth Israel Hospital as head nurse on the men's ward. Under the GI Bill, she then enrolled at UCONN and got her degree in Public Health Nursing and worked with The Visiting Nurse Association.

In 1949, Doris met the love of her life, Simon Konover, on a blind date in West Hartford, CT. They eloped six weeks later to NYC and later that year also had a Jewish wedding ceremony. They were married for 66 years, until Simon's passing in 2015. They made their home in West Hartford and raised three children. Simon and Doris also lived many happy years in Boca Raton, Florida.

Through the years, Doris shared her time and efforts with many philanthropic causes. The organizations that she was involved with are many and helped to transform lives. Most dear to Doris were her roles with The Hartford Jewish Federation, The Hartford Chapter of Hadassah, Hartford Israel Bonds and Hartford Jewish Family Services. Also, as part of a dynamic team with Simon, her community contributions were many.

Two honors that Doris received were as a representative of The State of Connecticut for Hadassah and an honorary degree from Gratz College.

Doris played golf and tennis for fun, but was very serious about her Bridge, Scrabble and Boggle games.

Doris was an avid reader her entire life.

Doris leaves her three children, Jane Coppa, Michael Konover/Vicki Konover and Steven Konover. She also leaves four grandchildren, their spouses and eight great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Simon, son-inlaw Bob, her five siblings and their spouses, all of her in-laws and many good friends.

Donations can be made to the Hartford Chapter of Hadassah, c/o Faith Helene, 43 Carlyle Road, West Hartford, CT 06117 or Jewish Family Services, 333 Bloomfield Avenue, Ste A, West Hartford, CT 06117 or a charity of the donor's choice. The family will be celebrating Doris's life privately.
