New law won’t help pedestrians
Effective Oct. 1, Connecticut passed a law allowing pedestrians to wave their hands at oncoming traffic for a safe passage at crosswalks [courant.com, Sept. 20, “New Connecticut law requires vehicles to stop when pedestrians at crosswalk raise their hand”]. How high do I need to wave my hands? See what kind of a response we would get if we asked five drivers if they knew about the law.
As an avid walker, I see this as a disastrous situation. It’s bad enough that motorists disregard walkers in the rightof-way after accessing the walk button. Adding this tidbit provides more confusion. I see rear-end collisions, injuries and possible death.
While I think the intention of creating the new law was meant to assist walkers, it will prove otherwise.
