Anderson, Marjorie B.Z. (Zehrer)

-

Marjorie Bertha Zehrer Anderson died on Tuesday, February 16, 2022, at Middlesex Hospital in Middletown, Connecticut. She was 98 years old.

The youngest daughter of Vera Doris Ellis Zehrer and John William Zehrer, Marjorie, or “Marge” as she preferred to be called, was born on January 15, 1924, in New Britain, Connecticut. In her younger years she attended St. Mark's Episcopal Church in New Britain where she was Christened, confirmed, married, and her daughter was Christened.

She attended New Britain public schools and graduated from Central Connecticut Teachers' College (now Central Connecticut State University). She taught elementary school for almost 40 years in Ridgefield, CT, Piedmont, WV, East Hampton, CT, and Enfield, CT. She enjoyed her students and had a special fondness for the smart-alecks and troublemakers, whose behavior she could not condone in the classroom but often laughed about at home.

In 1948 she married Lester Carl Anderson, after he completed his service in the US Navy during WWII and his education at Columbia. They had met in high school. They lived in many places, including Ridgefield CT, New Britain CT, Piedmont WV, Middle Haddam CT, Somers, CT and Stuart, FL. Several years after Les' death Marge married George Hosford in 2000 and lived in Palm City, FL until George's death in 2007.

After her retirement from teaching in the 1980s, Marge volunteered in a number of capacities. She particularly

enjoyed serving as President of her neighborhood association in Florida. She organized block parties and neighborhood picnics wherever she lived. She loved singing in the choirs of the various churches she attended. She was competitive at golf, tennis, cards, and is remembered by her family for somehow winning

every family Easter egg roll for decades without ever breaking an egg. She was someone her friends and neighbors knew they could call upon for a ride to the doctor, help with a project, or a sympathetic ear.

Marge was active and vital until a stroke in 2015 left her unable to live on her own and she moved in with her daughter and son-in-law. Several years later, her declining health necessitated a move to memory care assisted living.

Marge is survived by her daughter, Leslie AndersonAdams, her son-in-law Dave Adams, and many nieces

and nephews. She is remembered by her nieces and nephews as “the fun aunt” with whom they enjoyed spending weekends and school vacations and whom they thought of as a second mother. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters Barbara Casey, Mary Dudley and Virginia Brockett, her husbands Les Anderson and George Hosford, and several nieces and nephews.

Marge never met a cat or dog that she didn't like and had many pets over the years. All were pampered and lived to a ripe old age, prompting friends to remark that they hoped to be reincarnated as part of Marge's menagerie. In lieu of flowers or other remembrances, please consider making a memorial donation to the animal rescue organization of your choice.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.
