Pitsenberg­er powers Yale to victory over Cornell; Trinity wins

Freshman Joshua Pitsenberg­er caught a touchdown pass and ran for two short scores — all in the first half — and Yale breezed to a 38-14 victory over Cornell on Saturday at Ithaca, N.Y.

Nolan Grooms passed to Pitsenberg­er for a 5-yard score to stake Yale (1-1) to an early lead in the Ivy League opener.

Jameson Wang threw a 36-yard scoring strike to Nicholas Laboy to pull Cornell (1-1) even, but Pitsenberg­er ran it in from a yard out with 1:11 left in the first quarter to give the Bulldogs the lead for good.

Grooms connected with Mason Tipton for a 17-yard touchdown and Pitsenberg­er scored on a 1-yard run in the second quarter to push Yale’s lead to 28-7 at halftime.

The Bulldogs capped a 31-0 run with Jack Bosman’s 25-yard field goal and a 1-yard touchdown run by Tre Peterson in the third quarter.

Grooms completed 12 of 17 passes for 187 yards and ran for 55 yards on nine carries. Pitsenberg­er carried 17 times for 93 yards. Tipton had six receptions for 133 yards.

Yale is 52-30-2 all-time against the Big Red and has won five straight in a series that began in 1889.

At Hartford, Tyler Dinapoli ran for 130 yards and scored two touchdowns and the Bantams scores 19 unanswered

Trinity 19, Colby 7:

points in the NESCAC win.

Dinapoli scored on a 2-yard rush in the fourth quarter to seal the game for Trinity. He also caught an 11-yard scoring pass from Spencer Fetter in the third quarter. Fetter, who also tossed a 27-yard scoring pass to Thomas Walsh to get the Bantams (2-0) on the board in the third quarter, finished 19-of-25 for 229 yards.

Middlebury 24, Wesleyan 10:

At Middlebury, Vt., Ben Tauber threw for 271 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Panthers past the Cardinals for the NESCAC win.

Scott Ashton threw for 253 yards on 19-of-41 passing that included a 22-yard TD pass to Ezra Jenifer. Daniel Yoon also kicked a 41-yard field goal for Wesleyan (1-1).

Sacred Heart 38, Dartmouth 31:

At Fairfield, Malik Grant scored his third touchdown of the game in overtime and Ernest Howard followed with an intercepti­on as Sacred Heart defeated Dartmouth 38-31 on Saturday, ending the Big Green’s 20-game nonconfere­nce win streak.

Dartmouth’s streak had been the longest active one in the FCS.

Sacred Heart (2-2) came back from a 31-17 secondhalf deficit with Grant scoring twice including a 1-yarder with just over two minutes left in regulation.
