Late score lifts unbeaten Trinity to win at Middlebury

Colin McCabe scored his second touchdown, running in from three yards out with 1:08 left, to lift undefeated Trinity College to a 27-21 win over Middlebury in a battle of NESCAC unbeatens at Middlebury, Vt., on Saturday.

The Bantams, now 5-0 and in sole possession of first place, had led for most of the game until Middlebury quarterbac­k Kennon Cole connected on his third TD pass, a 25-yarder to Donovan Wood, which tied the game with 3:15 remaining.

On the next series, Trinity took over and quarterbac­k Spencer Fetter drove his team 75 yards in 10 plays that culminated in McCabe’s scoring run. Fetter completed 21 of 27 passes for 198 yards with TDs to DeVante Reid and Thomas Walsh. Fetter spread the ball around to six different receivers as Sean Clapp caugh five passes for 87 yards, Reid five for 39 and Walsh three for 23. William Kirby ran for 98 yards and McCabe 46 to go with his two scores. .

Yale 29, Bucknell 9: At New Haven, quarterbac­k Nolan Grooms rushed for three touchdowns and passed for another, and Yale overcame five turnovers.

Yale led 7-3 at halftime after Grooms connected with David Pantelis for a 13-yard touchdown to cap a 97-yard drive. The Bulldogs’ first drive of the second half ended with Grooms’ 9-yard touchdown run. Grooms added a 14-yard touchdown and a 21-yarder to cap the scoring with 3:43 left in the fourth.

Yale (4-1) won its fourth straight game. Bucknell (0-6) has lost 13 consecutiv­e dating to last season.

Grooms rushed for 95 yards and passed for 209 yards with four intercepti­ons. Tre Peterson added 84 yards rushing. Bucknell took a 3-0 lead after Rushawn Baker’s 75-yard run set up a 39-yard field goal by Matt Schearer. The Bison defense also forced punts on Yale’s first three drives.

Gavin Pringle grabbed Bucknell’s fourth intercepti­on on the opening play of the fourth quarter.

Sacred Heart 40, Stonehill 27:

At Fairfield, Marquez McCray threw for 405 yards and a touchdown and was one of four Sacred Heart players to run for a touchdown in the Pioneers’ win.

The Pioneers (4-2, 2-0 Northeast Conference) led 20-7 at the half before McCray scored on a 3-yard run to cap an 83-yard drive and then he connected with LJ Hackett for a 75-yard shocker.

The long pass came one play after the Skyhawks (3-1, 1-1) scored. Ashur Carraha was 18 of 28 for 221 yards and three touchdowns for Stonehill.

McCray was 21 of 30 and Malik Grant led the rushing offense with 104 yards as the defending conference champions won their 13th straight home game.

Sacred Heart finished with 594 yards and Stonehill had 402.
