McMahon, William J.

-

Army veteran. Bartender. Caterer. Landlord. Water company foreman. Grocery store baker. #1 Judge Judy fan. A fiercely independent (and stubbornly hardheaded) Irishman, Bill McMahon was, above all else, a fighter, despite his share of health issues. But no matter how many hats Bill wore, he was never too busy to swoop in faster than one of his prized racing pigeons to help out a family member, friend, or even a total stranger in need. Bill McMahon was pretty much Superman. On October 17, 2022, William J. McMahon, 80, retired his cape and found the peaceful rest he so deserved. A lifelong Connecticut resident, Bill was born and raised in Fairfield. He raised his own family in Shelton, working for many years at the Bridgeport Hydraulic Company. He would ultimately move to Windsor Locks to be closer to the pride and joys of his later years, his granddaughters, Jamie and Kaelyn Ludwig.

He loved to putter around his home, mowing the lawn, growing vegetables, and he often took his late dog Belle to brighten the days of patients at Mt. Sinai Rehab Hospital. As busy as he stayed, “Poppie” never missed a recital, softball game, school function, or celebration of any kind that involved his sweet “girls.”

He was also pretty fond of his “pal”, son David E. McMahon and wife Betsy; and also of his “queenie” (and often “pain in the rear”) daughter, Debi Ludwig and husband Jeff Ludwig; and, of course, his beloved “fur” son (and ever-faithful canine sidekick) Beau. He is also survived by his sister, Mary Gorton of Waterford, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Though loving, generous, trustworthy and hardworking, it's Billy's sarcastic wit that will surely be missed most of all. If he picked on you, he loved you… as his numerous friends and loved ones can attest.

Friends and family are invited to the Westport VFW to celebrate Billy's life from 2-4 pm on Saturday, October 29, 2022. Come share a story. Light refreshments will be served. Military honors will be bestowed at 2:30 pm. The VFW is located at 465 Riverside Avenue in Westport, CT.

In lieu of flowers, Billy's family asks that you consider making a donation in his name to Bandit's Place, a nonprofit animal rescue and wildlife rehabilitation center. (Paypal: Paypal.me/BanditsPlace or Check: PO Box 44, East Hartland, CT 06027.
