Paul, Sarah "Sally" Gene (Anthony)

-

Sarah “Sally” Gene Paul (nee Anthony), 84, passed away peacefully on October 17 after a long battle with Alzheimer's. Sally was born in January 1938 in Taunton, MA. A self-described “Yankee,” Sally spent her early youth in southern Massachusetts, including along the shores of her beloved Cape Cod. The family later moved to Plymouth, NH where she passed her adolescent and teenage years in a drafty manor house overlooking the Pemigewasset River. In 1956, Sally entered the University of New Hampshire where she majored in history, was an active member of the Alpha Chi Omega sorority, and most importantly met her life-long love, Sam Paul. Sally continued her post-graduate education in Boston and eventually taught at the Oak Hill School for the Blind in Hartford. She and Sam married in 1961. They moved to Granby, CT soon thereafter, a place she would call home for the majority of her life. In a yellow farmhouse in the hills of West Granby, Sally raised three sons and was an active volunteer in many community organization, including the Newcomers Club, American Field Service, registrar of voters, and Granby food bank, among others. Over the years, Sam and Sally developed a close circle of friends, affectionately dubbed “Camp Granby,” with whom they spent countless summer evenings at the Granby Tennis Club, on trips to Bermuda, and at multi-family gatherings at Groton Long Point and a family compound in Brookline, VT.

Over their 61 years of marriage, Sam and Sally travelled widely. Sally was a great adventurer, forever seeking out-of-the-way places to visit with an eye towards their historical significance. She was also a fierce proponent of culture and the arts, both as an inveterate reader as well as a life-long benefactor of Hartford's symphony, opera, and theatre organizations. In her free time, Sally enjoyed gardening, knitting, and writing letters to a wide network of family and friends. She also never missed an opportunity for a good prank. Sally was a devout Christian and active communicant at Trinity Episcopal Church in Tariffville, CT for 60 years.

Sally is predeceased by her parents, Luther and Gene, as well as by a brother David and sister-in-law Patricia. She leaves behind her husband Sam, sons Sam (Michele), David (Hrisanthi), and Michael (Katherine), as well as five grandchildren, Nicholas, Lucy, Harper, Sotirios, and Petros. Sally's passion for life and meaningful connection will be greatly missed by all.
