Tatum and Brown combine for 57 in win

-

Jayson Tatum scored 29 points, Jaylen Brown added 28 and the Boston Celtics beat the Heat 111-104 in Miami on Friday night in a rematch of last season’s Eastern Conference finals.

The Celtics — whose most recent trip to Miami was a Game 7 win in that playoff series — outscored Miami 42-24 from 3-point range, and improved to 2-0 under interim coach Joe Mazzulla.

Tyler Herro scored 25 points for Miami, which got 19 from Jimmy Butler, 18 from Bam Adebayo and 17 from Kyle Lowry.

Miami cut a 14-point deficit to five late, before back-to-back paint baskets by Tatum and the Celtics would hold on.

“We’ve got a great team and we’re still trying to figure each other out,” Tatum said. “And I love playing against the Heat. We’ve got some history here the last couple years, and they push you. They make you a better team. They’ve got a lot of fire, a lot of great players, a great coach.”

It’s Miami’s first 0-2 start since 2007-08 — meaning it’s the first in Erik Spoelstra’s 15-year run as coach. Miami had been one of only two teams without an 0-2 start in the last 15 seasons; now, Portland is the only team on that list.

Boston led by as many as 11 in the first half, took a 59-51 lead into the break and stretched the lead to 12 when Brown made backto-back baskets to open the third quarter.

Knicks, 130, Pistons 106: Jalen Brunson scored 17 points in his first home game at Madison Square Garden, Immanuel Quickley bounced back from a rough opener with 20 points and New York picked up its first victory of the season.

RJ Barrett, who also struggled with his shot in an overtime loss in Memphis in the season opener, rebounded with 18 points. Obi Toppin scored 16, Julius Randle had 15 and there was no chance of another tense finish in this one after the Knicks seized control late in the first quarter.

Barrett was 3 for 18 on Wednesday, missing all six 3-point attempts. Quickley came off the bench and was scoreless, missing all six of his shots.

Saddiq Bey scored 26 points for the Pistons, who beat Orlando in their opener. Detroit fell behind by 15 in the first quarter before working its way back in that victory, but there was no comeback from the type of deficit the Pistons faced Friday.

Bojan Bogdanovic scored 18 points and rookie Jaden Ivey had 17.
