Phillip Daniel Laby was born August 17,1944 to John & Eva Laby of Hartford. He was the youngest of their six children. He graduated from Hartford High School in 1962. He served as a Naval Corpsman in 196869 with both a Marine unit & Seabee unit in Vietnam. He also served in the Naval Reserve with Seabees upon his return from Vietnam until 1989 where he was attached to a Marine unit & was reactivate­d for Desert Storm until he was honorably discharged after the war's conclusion in 1990. Upon returning from Vietnam he graduated from Central CT State University receiving a computer programmin­g degree. He worked for Hartford Insurance Co. until 1990 when he went to work for the State of CT until 1999. He worked as a contract computer programmer for several companies before Y2K, programmin­g mainframe computer servers for smooth transition into the new century. After Y2K he retired from programmin­g and worked for Triple A as a driving instructor for 10 years. Afterwards he fully retired in 2011. For the last year he has lived at Cedar Mountain Center where he was known as “Smiley.” He is predecease­d by his wife, Christine Laby, parents John & Eva, brothers John, Richard, Michael, sister Kathy Zamparini. He is survived by his sister Karoline Balassano, his daughter Johanna Laby Brian & her husband, Patrick, his son Daniel Mark Laby, grandchild­ren Ava Elizabeth Brian & Claire Ann Brian and several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be from 5-7 pm Thursday November 3, at Molloy Funeral Home 906 Farmington Ave. West Hartford, and funeral services will be 1 pm on Friday Nov. 4. directly at Mt. St. Benedict Cemetery, 1 Cottage Grove Rd. Bloomfield. Phil asked in lieu of flowers to please either make a donation to the American Cancer Society, Purple Heart or the Wounded Warrior foundation in his memory.
