John P. Schaffner, 88, of South Windsor, CT., beloved husband of the late Maureen (Rowen) Schaffner died peacefully surrounded by his family on Friday, October 21, 2022. He was born on March 5, 1934 in Richmond Hills, Queens, NY, son of the late Anthony J. and Rosemary (Coen) Schaffner. He was a graduate of St. John's Prep High School in Queens, NY with the class of 1951. He went on to receive his bachelor's degree in engineerin­g from the Polytechni­c Institute of Brooklyn in 1959. He proudly served in the U.S. Army from 1953 - 1955. He later earned his master's in engineerin­g from Rensselaer Polytechni­c Institute. John married the love of his life, Maureen Rowen on June 16, 1962. They initially lived in Glastonbur­y, CT. and eventually settled in South Windsor for over 50 years. John was employed as a mechanical engineer for Pratt & Whitney Aircraft and later worked for Chandler-Evans for over 25 years until his retirement. He cherished the lifelong friends he made during his career. John loved the outdoors and especially enjoyed skiing, canoeing, sailing, birding and fly fishing all over New England. He loved to travel as much as possible with family and friends. He enjoyed sports cars, especially his red mustang and was a youth coach for his children in South Windsor. During his retirement he volunteere­d for the Hockanum River Committee, enjoying the time he got to spend in nature. John was an avid fan and was always present for his children's and grandchild­ren's lacrosse, field hockey, swimming, cross country, ultimate frisbee, basketball, football, and softball games as well as ski races and dance recitals. John's most cherished times were spent with his family. He is survived by his four children, Erin Tynan and her husband Richard of Somers, CT, Colleen Barisano and her husband Dana of Westford, MA, Patrick Schaffner and his wife Kelly Doherty-Schaffner of Glastonbur­y, CT. and Kathleen Schaffner and her husband Charles Clarke of Burlington, VT.: his beloved 9 grandchild­ren, Sean and Patrick Tynan, Cameron, Jake and Cole Barisano, Jack and Kaitlyn Schaffner, and Skylar and Rowen Clarke. John will be remembered for always putting others first, his true loyalty and abundance of love for his family, and of course for always being on time. His family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff at Buckingham Heights Memory Care in Glastonbur­y, CT. for their loving and compassion­ate care. Visiting hours will be at the Samsel & Carmon Funeral Home, 419 Buckland Rd. in South Windsor, CT. on Wednesday, November 2nd, 2022, from 9-10:30 AM followed by a Christian Mass to begin at 11:00 AM at St. Margaret Mary Church 80 Hayes Road in South Windsor, CT.
