Hughes, Janice Adele (Russell)

-

Janice Adele Russell Hughes, of Simsbury, Connecticut, passed away on October 26, 2022.

Jan was born in Portsmouth, New Hampshire on March 10, 1927, the daughter of the late Harold and Bertha (Chapman) Russell.

She grew up in Portsmouth and spent many wonderful childhood summers “down at camp” on Goat Island in New Castle, New Hampshire. Growing up, she enjoyed swimming and golf and was one of the first female lifeguards in the State of New Hampshire.

Upon graduation from Portsmouth High School in 1945, she attended The University of New Hampshire and received a bachelor's degree in occupational therapy in 1950. In 1952, she married her late husband, Philip Bradley Hughes (LTC., U.S. Army) and lived in numerous places in the U.S. and abroad during his military career. Jan had a wide range of interests and especially enjoyed painting, ceramics, bridge, and time by the ocean. She was an exceptionally strong, kind person with a great sense of humor and a very curious mind that kept her young.

She was also predeceased by her brother, Howell Russell. She is survived by her four children, Kevin Hughes (Miyuki), Jo Anne Dowling (Kevin), Linda Hughes, Bruce Hughes (Eva), and five grandchildren, Brad Dowling and Eleanor, Lindsey, Fiona, and Aidan Hughes.

Jan's family would like to thank the nurses and staff at Caleb Hitchcock for their exceptional, compassionate care. Separately, we would also like to thank Agnes and Sharon, whose care and friendship made such a difference.

A private service will be held.

Jan was dearly loved by her family and will be greatly missed.
