Undefeated Trinity rolls Bowdoin 38-3; Central wins first game

Spencer Fetter completed 20 of 26 passes for 361 yards and four touchdowns to lead the undefeated Trinity football team to a 38-3 NESCAC win over Bowdoin on Saturday in Hartford.

After a scoreless first period, Colin McCabe got the Bantams on the board with a 3-yard scoring run early in the second. Fetter then added to the lead with scoring passes of 10 and 23 yards to DeVante Reid in the final 3:37 of the half.

Fetter also had scoring passes of 21 yards to Thomas Walsh and 25 to Sean Clapp in the second half. Clapp led the way with eight catches for 159 yards and Reid caught five for 115. Trinity also put up 189 yards rushing and led the Polar Bears (2-5) in total offense 550-240.

Trinity, now 7-0 with two games remaining, sits atop the NESCAC standings with a one-game lead over Middlebury.

Central Connecticu­t State 34, Wagner 7: At New Britain, Nasir Smith ran for a career-high 174 yards and three touchdowns as the Blue Devils won for the first time this season.

The Blue Devils (1-7, 1-3 Northeast Conference) came into the game having lost seven straight games and all three conference contests, but scored the game’s first 28 points, three on runs by Smith, and controlled the ball for almost 41 of the game’s 60 minutes.

Shon Mitchell threw for a touchdown and added a 12-yard touchdown run in the second half for Central Connecticu­t. Smith had a career-high 31 carries and scored on runs of 5, 18 and 7 yards.

Wesleyan 13, Amherst 7 (OT): At Amherst, Mass., Charlie McPhee scored from a yard out as time ran out in overtime to lead the 5-2

Cardinals to the NESCAC win over the Mammoths.

Wesleyan got on the board first as Kade Doverspike blocked a first-quarter punt that was recovered by Nerdo Moreau in the end zone. The lead held up until late in the fourth quarter when Amherst quarterbac­k Mike Piazza hit Jack Betts on a 4-yard scoring pass.

The QB duo of David Estevez and Nike Candido combined to complete 23 of 31 passes for 285 yards for the Cardinals.

St. Francis, Pa., 44, Sacred Heart 14: At Fairfield, Cole Doyle tied a school record with five touchdowns passes and ran for another score to lead St. Francis of Pennsylvan­ia. Doyle opened the scoring with a 34-yard touchdown run then threw four of his TD passes as the Red Flash (6-2, 5-0 Northeast Conference) blew to a 34-7 halftime lead.

Sacred Heart (4-4, 2-2) entered as one of the top passing defenses in FCS, ranking third in yards allowed (119.4) and fourth in efficiency (102.4), but Doyle lit up the Pioneers, completing 22 of 28 passes for 264 yards. QuaSean Holmes had 168 yards rushing on 13 carries.

Malik Grant scored both Sacred Heart touchdowns, one receiving and one rushing. He had 104 yards rushing on 19 carries.

Late Friday

Yale 41, Columbia 16: At New York, Nolan Grooms threw four touchdown passes and Yale won the Ivy League game. Yale (5-2, 3-1) bounced back from a 20-13 loss at Pennsylvan­ia and has won five of its last six games. Grooms was 16-of-33 passing for 346 yards. Ryan Lindley had two touchdown catches and finished with six receptions for 100 yards. Chase Nenad had three catches for 117 yards and a score.
