Cromwell/Portland holds off Valley Regional/Old Lyme in Pequot Sassacus showdown
Cromwell/Portland quarterback Cole Brisson had two touchdown passes in the second half and senior cornerback Johnny Beltre deflected a conversion pass in the end zone with a little over a minute to play as Cromwell/Portland held off Valley Regional/Old Lyme 28-27 in a battle of unbeaten Pequot Sassacus teams at Pierson Park in Cromwell Friday night.
Cromwell (7-0) won its 21st straight game.
Valley Regional (5-1) scored with 1:08 left in the game when DiAngelo JeanPierre threw a 33-yard touchdown pass to Jacob Rand to cut Cromwell’s lead to 28-27. Valley went for the two-point conversion but Beltre deflected Jean-Pierre’s pass in the end zone.
“When I was playing defense on [Michael Galberth], I saw the quarterback speed out to my side and when I let go of [Galberth] to try to rush him, I saw his eyes locked in with [Galberth] so I knew he was going to throw it and that’s what he did so I jumped,” Beltre said. “It was exhilarating. I didn’t even know I could jump that high.”
Wethersfield 41, South Windsor 7: The Eagles rolled past the Bobcats in a CCC Tier 2 road game from South Windsor, behind three touchdowns from Cam Righi. The sophomore quarterback tossed two TD passes, to Justin Nardella and Ethan Lemos, and ran for a third.
Berlin 35, Avon 8: Josh Clement found the end zone four times and Berlin defeated the Falcons in a CCC Tier 3 home game to stay undefeated.
Clement rushed for 100 yards and four touchdowns.
Maloney 32, Conard 0: The unbeaten Spartans rolled to another win with a shutout CCC Tier 1 victory at Conard in West Hartford. Josh Boganski rushed for three touchdowns and Kyle Valentine tossed two TDs for Maloney (7-0). Joziah Gonzalez and Donte Kelly each had a TD catch. Conard falls to 3-4.
Haddam-Killingworth 56, Coginchaug/Hale-Ray/ East Hampton 6: The
Cougar ground game tallied six touchdowns to roll to a Pequot Sassacus home win over the Coginchaug co-op.
Rockville 44, Coventry/ Windham Tech/Bolton/ Lyman Memorial 6: Malachi Mapp rushed for three touchdowns and the Rams rolled past the Coventry co-op in a Pequot Uncas home win.
SMSA co-op 43, Stafford/ East Windsor/Somers 21: Three fourth-quarter rushing touchdowns from Daniel Hernandez helped the undefeated Tigerhawks put the Bulldogs away in a Pequot Uncas home win. Hernandez had five total TDs, including two passing, and rushed for 235 yards.
North Haven 10, Cheshire 0: In a tightly contested SCC Tier 1 game, the Nighthawks edged out the Rams for the road victory.
West Haven 52, Sheehan 0: Brady Rossacci rushed for 86 yards but the Titans failed to find the end zone in a SCC Tier 2 shutout loss at home to the unbeaten Blue Devils.
