Family treasures honor by Newington PD

-

We want to thank Chief Stephen Clark, the sworn officers he commands and all the men and women working in and supporting the Newington Police Department. The law enforcement oath states, “I will uphold the values of my community, and the agency I serve.” The men and women of our police department truly reflect the values of our community. Dignity, integrity, sensitivity and accountability are just a few examples. Despite tragedy, in their personal or professional life, they respectfully maintain and promulgate these values formed in our community and continue their mission to place the safety of others above their own.

In August, our son, at the age of 24 passed away after a two-and-a-halfyear battle with sarcoma. Growing up, like most children, values are implanted primarily from the home but also from the surrounding community. Wanting to serve, his goal was to become a police officer in Newington.

Working toward that goal he attended the Youth Police Academy in Newington and later completed his degree in criminal justice. However, after his diagnosis, and knowing the physical demands and the endurance required as part of the job, becoming a sworn police officer was no longer attainable. Accordingly, in response, the Newington Police Department led by Chief Clark commenced a swearing in of our son posthumously as an honorary Newington police officer. We are profoundly grateful for the heartfelt ceremony with family, friends and members of the department present.

As a family we will always treasure this honor, a firm reminder of the manifestation of a pledge to uphold the values of the Newington community, and the Newington Police Department, which these men and women serve. Uphold indeed. Godspeed.

Roland, Kathleen and

Matthew Bishop, Newington
