NFL analyst: Wilson could be one of ‘biggest busts’ in NFL history
Thursday night was not a good look for Zach Wilson.
In a 19-3 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars, the New York Jets quarterback was 9-for-18 for 82 yards with an interception for a 41.9 passer rating.
Down by 13 late in the third quarter, Wilson was replaced by practice squad quarterback Chris Streveler. This is only the latest installment of disappointment from the No. 2 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.
Here’s what Ryan Clark said about Wilson on First Take:
“Watching Zach Wilson now, what’s to keep Zach Wilson off of this list. Biggest busts in NFL history: Ryan Leaf, to Marcus Russell Zach Wilson. That is the conversation we are starting to have. When you are benched for a guy who wasn’t even active on your team in Week 1. It’s been Joe Flacco at quarterback. It’s been Mike White at quarterback. When you go into a game where neither one of those guys are available and you are still benched, they still think in some way they can bring somebody off of the pine, that they produce better than you can, then it’s trouble.’
This time, Wilson addressed his role in the offensive issues.
“Yeah, it is hard,” Wilson said. “And that’s when I’ve got to look myself in the mirror. I’ve got to go back and I’ve got to go back and watch this tape. You’ve got to be hard. You’ve got to be hard on yourself. You just say, ‘Why are we not moving the ball?’ And that starts with me. What am I doing that I have to help this team to be in a better position to move the ball? Whatever it is, I’ve got to figure it out.”
Streveler finished 10-of-15 for 90 yards and had nine carries for 54 yards.
“Yeah, it is hard. And that’s when I’ve got to look myself in the mirror. I’ve got to go back and I’ve got to go back and watch this tape. You’ve got to be hard. You’ve got to be hard on yourself. You just say, ‘Why are we not moving the ball?’ And that starts with me. What am I doing that I have to help this team to be in a better position to move the ball? Whatever it is, I’ve got to figure it out.”
