Genevieve Agnes Bednarz, 86, of Wethersfie­ld, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 1, 2023, at her home. Born in Hartford on August 7, 1936, daughter of the late Stanley and Anna (Koziarz) Bednarz, she was raised in Hartford and was a graduate of SS. Cyril & Methodius School and Bulkeley High School, Class of 1954. After high school, Genevieve continued her education at Hillyer College in Hartford before taking a position at a law office as a legal assistant. She later worked for the Attorney General's Office in the State Capitol as the Attorney General's Executive Secretary where she stayed for 30 years until her retirement in 2003. She was a lifelong parishione­r of SS. Cyril & Methodius Church in Hartford where she served as a eucharisti­c minister and as a member of the Ladies Guild, the Holy Rosary Society, and as a member of the Golden Senior Fellowship. She also volunteere­d at the church as member of the Parish Council, as a librarian at SS. Cyril & Methodius School, and as a volunteer at Parish Picnics and Dozynki Festivals. For all of her work in her parish and in the community, she received the Archdioces­e of Hartford's Hope Award. Proud of her Polish heritage, Genevieve belonged to the Polish Cultural Club, the Polish Democratic Club, the Polish National Home of Hartford, and as a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Polish Army Veterans' Associatio­n of America (PAVA), Post #119 and the Polish Women's Alliance, Group 553. She also served as Second Vice President and Financial Secretary of the United Polish Societies and as Treasurer of the Pulaski-Kosciuszko Committee. At their 50th Annual Dinner in 2012, the United Polish Societies of Hartford presented Genevieve with the Polonia Distinguis­hed Service Award for her years of service to the Polish Community in Greater Hartford. She leaves a brother, Edward Bednarz and his wife Barbara of Wethersfie­ld; a nephew, John Lorenc and his partner, Terez Fraser of Portland, ME; a cousin, John Bednarz and his wife Danuta of Windsor Locks; and a cousin, Joanne Bednarz of Hartford. In addition to her parents, she was predecease­d by a sister and brotherin-law, Helen Bernadette & Teddy Lorenc. Her family will receive friends on Friday, January 13, 2-5 p.m., at the Waszkelewi­cz South Green Memorial Home, 43 Wethersfie­ld Ave., Hartford. Family and friends may gather on Saturday, January 14, 9 a.m., at the Waszkelewi­cz South Green Memorial Home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial, 10 a.m., at SS. Cyril & Methodius Church, Hartford. Burial will follow in Mt. St. Benedict Cemetery, Bloomfield. Memorial donations may be made to SS.
