Carol Ann (Hastings) Butterwort­h of Tolland, CT passed away at the age of 81 on January 14, 2023, surrounded by love.

Carol was born on December 1, 1941 to Heywood and Anne Hastings in Hartford, CT. After Carol graduated from Hartford Public High School in 1960, she received scholarshi­ps to attend Hartford College for Women and Mt. Holyoke College where she earned a B.A. with distinctio­n in 1965. Later she received an M.A. from Trinity College.

She married Michael in 1966, and they went to Stanford University together. She graduated in 1968 with a degree in education. Carol became a high school English teacher in California and continued teaching in Connecticu­t when they returned. She became a member of the Tolland Board of Education, and worked tirelessly for the Town of Tolland as Assistant to the Town Manager.

In 1982 Carol earned a law degree from Western New England College of Law and worked for many years at Robinson and Cole in Hartford, CT.

She is survived by Michael Butterwort­h, her husband of 56 years, their daughter and son-in-law Beth (Butterwort­h) and Marc Alan Daitch of Tolland, CT, two granddaugh­ters - Olivia Anne Daitch of Topsham, ME and Lily Grace Daitch, Tolland, CT - Carol's brother, Allan Hastings, and his wife, Dale Hastings, of West Hartford, CT.

Along with her love of literature, law and democracy, Carol was a cat lover. She also leaves behind her two beloved cats, Aspen and Mikado a.k.a. "The Little Monsters". They will be going to live with another animal lover, her granddaugh­ter Olivia.

She supported numerous organizati­ons, including the National Wildlife Fund and The Humane Society. She was a breast cancer survivor and a supporter of the Susan G. Koman Fund. In lieu of flowers please consider donating to any of the causes she cared so much about. Services are private.
