McVerry, Martha

-

Martha (Kenney) McVerry of Chester, CT died peacefully on January 14, 2023. She was born in Waterbury, CT on January 30, 1933 to Alfred and Martha (Hogan) Kenney. She attended local schools, graduating from Crosby High School and spent two years at the University of Connecticut, where she met her beloved future husband. She finished her education at Katherine Gibbs in Providence, RI. Martha married Thomas McVerry Jr. (deceased 2006) in 1955. In 1959, they moved to Old Saybrook, CT where they resided for more than 50 years. She is survived by her adored son, Thomas McVerry III of Cromwell, CT and her two much loved sisters Carol Dew of Branford, CT and Christine Woods of Longmeadow, MA. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews who will always remember her as a warm and loving presence in their lives. Martha (or Marky as she was known to family and many friends) put her Katie Gibbs skills to work assisting her husband Tom who was a CPA at his office in Old Saybrook. She was still on the job when John Beatty joined the business as Tom's partner. John was a great choice, he maintains the business to this day. Over the years, John and his wife Suanne became wonderful and very close friends. Their care in recent years has been a gift. Martha also enjoyed a long lasting friendship with Old Saybrook neighbors Trudy and John Horan - as proven by the foot path that developed between their houses. She loved to play Scrabble and was a very talented artist, creating many treasured oil paintings. She also applied her art to decorating ceramic tiles which, with the help of Tom's carpentry skills ended up in charming side tables and clever plant stands. Her love of colors was reflected in both her closet and her home. Her smile was always ready as was her sense of humor. In 2012, Martha moved to a senior living community now know as Masonicare at Chester Village. There she met her loving late in life companion Bill Bernhart with whom she shared many very happy years. A memorial service for Martha will be held at Masonicare Chester on March 7th at 2:00 o'clock. Donations in Marthas' memory may be made to Chester Village West Foundation, 317 West Main St., Chester, CT 06412 or the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, 617 Main St., Middletown, CT 06457.
