Glover, John H.
John Humphrey Glover, 93, longtime resident of Simsbury, beloved husband of the late Nancy Chamberlain, passed away Wednesday, December 27, 2023. Born in Gary, IN on May 20, 1930, to Lynn Amariah Glover of Manchester, MI and Maud Evelyn Humphrey of Harpersfield, NY, John was raised in Ogden Dunes, IN, Miami Beach, FL, and Asheville, NC. After being part of the 1st graduating class from Lee H. Edwards High School in Asheville, NC in 1947, John went on to earn his B.S. in Mathematics and Actuarial Science at the University of Michigan in 1951. John enlisted with the Navy in 1952 serving as Lieutenant aboard the USS Salem. During this time he met the love of his life, Nancy, on a blind double date sailing in Biscayne Bay while home from Naval training. After countless love letters, John married Nancy on November 29, 1953. Nancy followed the USS Salem from port to port in the Mediterranean before John received his honorable discharge. They spent 68 loving years together in Natick, MA, Yonkers, NY, Norwalk, CT, Battle Creek, MI, and Simsbury, CT. John worked as a Chartered Life Underwriter with TIAA for about a decade, reporting to their Manhattan office. He moved the family to Michigan in the late 60s to explore its wondrous wilderness and his second career. After 4 years, they missed Connecticut so much that they moved back and settled in Simsbury where John took a position as vice president with Travelers Insurance. During his retirement, John was instrumental in moving the USS Salem from Philadelphia to Quincy, MA to form the US Naval Shipbuilding Museum. He was an avid fan of college football and especially his alma mater the Michigan Wolverines. He took great pride in his small fleet of sailboats and loved spending time with his grandkids at their home on Squadron Line. John is survived by his son, John L. and wife, Elizabeth H. of Franklin, MA; daughters, Marjorie A. Jonas of Miami Beach, FL, and Suzanne V. Sabia and her husband, Leonard of West Simsbury; adored grandchildren, Peter B., John Patrick, and Geoffrey S. Glover, Mollie F., Elizabeth “Libby” and Jacob T.
