Seymour “Sy” Menchel, 92, formerly of Newington, passed away Wednesday, February 28, 2024. Son of the late Samuel and Ray Menchel, he was born in Bronx, NY in 1932. Seymour served in the United States Air Force. He was a graduate of the University of Connecticu­t, Class of 1955, and also a proud member of the UCONN Men’s Basketball team. Sy considered himself a Husky for life. Sy loved playing, officiatin­g, and watching basketball and shared his love for the sport with all.

Sy owned and operated the Pike Drive-In, Berlin Cine 1 & 2, and Vernon Cine 1 & 2 with his brother, Bernie, bringing the communitie­s together with movies and popcorn. Sy loved the theaters and movies, but even greater was his love for his family. He was happy to spoil his only child, Jennifer, and enjoyed time spent with his beloved wife of 60 years, Fay. Sy loved traveling around town in his blue Cadillac convertibl­e with their special Siberian Husky, Willow. Sy, affectiona­tely called, “Papa”, was an incredible grandfathe­r to his three, dear grandsons of whom he was so proud. An amazing husband, father, grandfathe­r, brother, uncle, and friend, Seymour will forever be missed by the people who had the honor of knowing him. He leaves behind his best friend and wife, Fay Menchel, his adored daughter Jennifer and her husband, Patrick Babcock of Sturbridge MA, his grandsons Aidan, Connor, and Cian Babcock, and his nephews and nieces. Seymour is predecease­d by his parents, as well as his sisters and brothers, Bernard Menschell, Eleanor Jaffe, Sylvia Slotkin, Martin Slotkin, and Marilyn Sacher. Relatives and friends are invited to call on Friday, March 8, 2024 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Duksa Family Funeral Homes at Newington Memorial, 20 Bonair Ave., Newington. A funeral service will begin at 11:30 a.m at Newington Memorial. Memorial donations can be made to any local dog rescue or shelter in need in honor of Sy and his love for dogs.
