Kuehn, Barbara Strider

-

Barbara Strider Kuehn passed away peacefully in Atlanta, Georgia, on Friday, February 23, 2024, with her loving daughter Suzanne by her side.

Barbara or “Babs” was born in the coal-mining town of Wheeling, West Virginia, on March 15, 1929, daughter to The Right Reverend Robert E.L. Strider, Episcopal Bishop of West Virginia, and his wife Eleanor Greer Strider. She attended George School, in Newtown, Pennsylvania, and graduated in 1947. While there Barbara or “Rocky,” as her classmates called her, lettered in field hockey, was captain of the basketball team and president of her class. As years passed, Barbara was a loyal and enthusiastic participant in class reunions, even organizing her 70th.

Barbara then attended the University of Rochester School of Nursing, class of 1952. It was there that she met her husband, Paul G. Kuehn, who was in the medical school. They married on April 17, 1952, lived in New York City for Paul's training, then settled in South Windsor, Connecticut, and went on to have four children. In New York City, Barbara was the head nurse of an orthopedic floor.

Even though Barbara's mother died when she was 6 years-old, her four children will tell you that Barbara was an outstanding mother. She taught them the importance of loving kindness, service to others, faith in God, and unconditional love, which she so gracefully exemplified.

Barbara was a devout Christian and a faithful member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in South Windsor, Connecticut. She read her Bible daily and maintained a list of people who needed prayer. Even in her final days, she delighted in hearing a favorite hymn or Bible verse.

From 1984 to 1993, Barbara returned to the workforce in the Alumni/Development Office at the Loomis Chaffee School in Windsor, Connecticut, the school that all her children attended. She loved working there, and they loved having her.

Upon retirement, Barbara and Paul moved to Florida: Naples, St. Augustine, then Jacksonville, where they lived with their son, Dr. Stephen Kuehn and daughterin-law Chanda, who welcomed them into their family. Barbara's final years were spent in Atlanta, Georgia, with her daughter Suzanne and family, who cared for her with love and tenderness.

Barbara is preceded in death by her husband Paul, brother Robert. and sister Sydney. She is survived by her brother David Strider, daughters Kathryn (David) Noll, Suzanne (Greg) Mason, and Carolyn (Peter Sinanian) Kuehn; her son, Dr. Stephen (Chanda) Kuehn; fifteen grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. A celebration of life will be held in her honor on Friday, April 26, at 2:30 pm at Beaches Museum Chapel, 505 Beach Boulevard, Jacksonville Beach, Florida, 32250. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the wonderful staff who cared for our mother. Please make checks out to Charter Senior Living, marked “staff donations in honor of Barbara Kuehn,” and send to 4450 Old Hamilton Mill Rd, Buford, GA 30518.
