King, Ian George
Ian George King, 88, of Cromwell, Connecticut, passed away on March 16, 2024, with his loving family by his side. Ian was born in Cleveland, Ohio on April 12, 1935, to Thomas Baird King and Williamina Hall Cruickshanks. When Ian was a young boy, his family moved to Milford, CT, where he grew up and graduated from Milford High School in 1953.
Ian attended the University of Connecticut, where he met his wife, Elaine, and was a proud veteran, having served in the Army during the Korean War. He was a manufacturing consultant for most of his career and lived an active life, scuba diving, boating, skiing, biking, writing, traveling, camping and more. Ian loved music and his taste was eclectic, listening to everyone from Joan Baez and Judy Collins, to the Beatles and Jefferson Airplane, to Joan Sutherland, Santana, and Ravi Shankar.
He was incredibly proud of his Scottish ancestry, reciting Robert Burns as his father did before him, listening to bagpipe music, and reading books like “How the Scots Invented the Modern World: The True Story of How Western Europe's Poorest Nation Created Our World & Everything in It.” Thankfully, he stopped short of wearing a kilt because he didn't have the legs for it and never learned to play the bagpipes because he couldn't carry a tune if his life depended on it.
He was extremely proud of his Scottish ancestry and quite proud of his Irish ancestry. He was reluctant to trace his roots too far back for fear of discovering English ancestry. To his chagrin, one of his children is considered the family genealogist and happily informed him that he does in fact, have English ancestors, which was rewarded with a smirk and a twinkle in his eye.
Ian was predeceased by his parents and sister, Mary Marshall King Piser, his wife, Elaine Ann Jagielski, and his son, Geoffrey Marshall King.
He is survived by his children Deirdre King-Hooge, Bruce King, Susan King, Ian King and Taylor King, grandchildren Eric Pick, Elaine Pick and Finn King, great grandchildren Harper and Harrison, his former wife Sharon Phillips King, his close cousin, Tommy King, and nieces and nephew, Nancie Piser, Janet Piser and Jim Piser.
In keeping with Ian's wishes, there are no calling hours and services will be private.
