ROCKY HILL — Veterans are invited to the 2018 Stand Down, scheduled for Friday, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the state Veterans Home in Rocky Hill.

This year, more federal, state and community service providers are expected than in past events, state Veterans Affairs Commissioner Thomas Saadi said.

What is a Stand Down?

The dictionary definition is a relaxation of a military unit’s status — The alert is over; we can stand down now. In Connecticut, the Veterans’ Stand Down started in 1992. The initial focus was helping homeless veterans, but the scope has widened greatly.

What can veterans expect this year?

One-stop shopping for material assistance and services, from a free pair of socks to medical screening, will be offered. Providers represent federal and state agencies, businesses, educational institutions, clubs and nonprofit organizations.

Representatives of the state Judicial Branch and Department of Motor Vehicles, for example, will be available to help veterans clear up minor motor vehicle infractions, Saadi said.

Although clothing and other physical necessities will be available, Saadi said the veterans department has been reaching out to more service and program providers, aiming for a holistic treatment of attending veterans.

“The need is connectivity,” he said, “ensuring that we are connecting veterans with employment assistance, medical screening, benefits they earned but never applied for.”

How many veterans are expected to attend?

Last year, the event, which goes on rain or shine under tents, attracted about 900 veterans. This year, about 1,000 are expected. Veterans should try to arrive before noon. Lunch will be provided.

How do I get there?

The state is providing free transportation to the Veterans Home campus at 287 West St., Rocky Hill. Visit www.ct.gov/ ctva to see the schedule and for more information about the Stand Down.
