Collier Cut From U.S. Team

UConn’s Napheesa Collier, the last remaining college player trying out for the U.S. team that will participat­e in the FIBA World Cup, was among the latest round of cuts as the roster was reduced to 13 following a weekend tournament in France. But, as usual, UConn remains well-represente­d with former Huskies Sue Bird, Diana Taurasi, Tina Charles, Morgan Tuck and Breanna Stewart. Also making the cut were Elena Delle Donne, Brittney Griner, Jewell Loyd, Nneka Ogwumike, Kelsey Plum, Elizabeth Williams, A’ja Wilson and the Connecticu­t Sun’s Layshia Clarendon. The team will need to get down to 12 before the World Cup begins on Saturday in Spain.

Central, Hartford Athletes Bring Home Honors

Central Connecticu­t senior Ashley Cavanaugh and freshman Roma McLaughlin swept the Northeast Conference weekly awards for women’s soccer. Cavanaugh was tabbed the league's Player of the Week and Defensive Player of the Week, while McLaughlin was named the Rookie of the Week. The pair helped the Blue Devils extend their unbeaten streak to seven games and improve to 6-1-2 overall. ... After leading Hartford volleyball to a 2-1 record at the Lafayette Invitation­al, junior Jenna Bridges and sophomore Megan Anderson received weekly awards from the America East. A middle blocker, Bridges took home America East Player of the Week honors for the third time in as many weeks, while Anderson, a setter, was named Setter of the Week for the second consecutiv­e week. ... Lucas Chaude scored the equalizer late in the first half and Griffin Luczek scored the winning goal in the second half in Eastern Connecticu­t’s 2-1 victory over St. Joseph in men’s soccer at Mansfield. Justin Jensen had two assists for Eastern (5-1-0). Shayne Johnson scored for St. Joseph (2-5-0).

Rangers Send 6 To Hartford

New York Rangers general manager Jeff Gorton announced that the team has trimmed its training camp roster by eight players. Sean Day, Brandon Halverson, Dawson Leedahl, Chris Nell, Vince Pedrie and Ty Ronning have been assigned to training camp with the Hartford Wolf Pack of the AHL. ... Elmcrest Country Club’s Jack Kearney of Massachuse­tts carded a 3-under 68 in the first round of the 21st NEGA Senior Amateur Championsh­ip Tuesday at Burlington Country Club (Vt.) to take a three-stroke lead over the other 119 competitor­s in the field. Bill Hermanson of Black Hall Club and Patrick McGuiness of Keney GC were the top Connecticu­t finishers with 74s.
