Courant announces the winners based on employee surveys.

The Hartford Courant named 60 local companies and organizati­ons to its Top Workplaces list for 2018, led by Berkshire Hathaway HomeServic­es New England Properties, CNC Software Inc. and Emergency Resource Management as top winners in their size categories.

The eighth annual Courant Top Workplaces awards event was at the Aqua Turf in Southingto­n.

Berkshire Hathaway HomeServic­es New England Properties, with 52 offices in Connecticu­t, finished No. 1 among10 winners in the large employers category, with at least 500 employees in Hartford, Tolland, Middlesex, Windham and New London counties. Berkshire Hathaway is a publicly traded company.

In the midsize category, with 15 winners, CNC Software Inc., which manufactur­es computer-aided design and computer-aided manufactur­ing equipment, emerged on top. CNC, in Tolland, is privately owned.

Among small employers, with 50 to 149 employees in the area, Emergency Resource Management, which provides ambulance crews to rural fire department­s, was No. 1. The privately owned company, which is headquarte­red in Portland and has 75 local employees, has appeared on the Top Workplaces list for six years.

The awards are based on employee surveys administer­ed in the spring by WorkplaceD­ynamics, The Courant’s partner, which works with more than 40 media companies nationwide.

The top leadership award in the small employers division — recognitio­n for the executive who scores highest in confidence measures by his or her employees – went to Robert Ziegler, the founder of Emergency Resource Management.

Perry Lorenz of A/Z Corporatio­n, a North Stonington-based constructi­on firm, was the leadership winner in the midsize category. Lorenz also won the award in 2016.

In the large employers’ category, Chandler Howard, CEO of Liberty Bank, won the leadership award. Liberty Bank, which finished No. 4 in the large employers’ category this year, won the top award in its category last year. Howard is retiring at the end of the year after more than a decade at the bank.

First-time winners this year included Foodshare in Bloomfield, Dutch Point Credit Union in Wethersfie­ld and New England Home Care in Cromwell.

Seven employers have made the Top Workplaces list all eight years. They are Connecticu­t Online Computer Center; InterCommu­nity, Inc.; Physical Therapy and Sports Medicine Centers; InCord; Integrated Rehabilita­tion Services; Gowrie Group/ Maritime Program Group; Standard Builders, Inc.
