Auriemma stands tall by sitting 5 starters

STORRS — Looking to disrupt the sludgy flow of what is an unofficial January holiday — The Annual Worst Game In Program History — Geno Auriemma benched his five starters midway through the first quarter Sunday against South Florida and called on five reserves.

Out with the first wave, in with the second, and so began the scramble to remember what number Molly Bent and Batouly Camara actually wear. It was just 4:36 into the game and USF — the JV version of the injury-decimated Bulls, really — was outplaying and out-working the disinteres­ted Huskies.

“Sometimes it just doesn’t look right, and it didn’t look right,” Auriemma said after UConn’s 63-46 victory. “It’s gotten to the point in coaching where you just make suggestion­s, and you can’t tell people what you want them to do. You just make a suggestion, and if they want to do it, they do it. And if they don’t, they don’t. So I suggested that they sit down.
