East Catholic tops boys area rankings, sits 2nd in state, with Glastonbury on the rise

- By Shawn McFarland

Not too much changed in the state boys basketball rankings, as Sacred Heart, East Catholic and Windsor have a tight grip on the top of the leaderboards. Glastonbury, which beat No. 8 Farmington this week, rose in the area rankings and entered the state rankings for the first time this season.

Cromwell, which is 8-0 coming off a state title season, rose in the area rankings. Prince Tech, which has averaged over 91 points in its past three games, is on the rise as well.

State

1. SACRED HEART (9-1): An already dominant Hearts team added another weapon in transfer Lorenzo Washington, a sophomore point guard who last played at The Patrick School in New Jersey. Sacred Heart went 2-0 last week in convincing fashion. Last week: 1.

2. EAST CATHOLIC (7-0): The Eagles defeated a strong East Hartford team on Tuesday, then beat Berlin by over 30 points on Friday to remain undefeated. As long as Joey Reilly, Matt Knowling and Jaylin Hunter continue to share the ball as well as they do, the Eagles are the CCC’s most untouchable team. LW: 2.

3. WINDSOR (7-1): The Warriors played their two closest games of the season thus far — a 61-55 win over Hartford Public, and a 7068 win over Simsbury, but posted an undefeated week nonetheless. LW: 3.

4. BASSICK (10-0): Bassick has the best record in the state, and beat strong Hillhouse and Weaver squads as part of a 3-0 week. LW: 4.

5. NOTRE DAMEWEST HAVEN (9-0): Like Bassick, Notre DameWest Haven went 3-0 on the week, with wins over Shelton, Wilbur Cross and East Haven. LW: 5.

6. WATERFORD (9-0): Looking more and more like one of the top teams in Division II each week, Waterford beat Ledyard and Killingly last week. LW: 6.

7. TRUMBULL (8-1): Trumbull bounced back from its first loss of the season with wins over McMahon and Staples. LW: 7.

8. EAST LYME (8-1): Led by scoring aficionado Dev Ostrowski, East Lyme went 3-0 on the week, with wins over NFA, Bacon Academy and Woodstock Academy. LW: 9.

9. NEWTOWN (8-0): Newtown went 2-0 on the week with wins over Bethel and Pomperaug to remain undefeated. LW: Unranked.

10. GLASTONBURY (8-1): The Tomahawks went 2-0 on the week, highlighted by a nine-point win over a talented Farmington squad. Glastonbury’s only loss on the year came to No. 6 Waterford. LW: Unranked.

Area

1. EAST CATHOLIC (7-0)

2. WINDSOR (7-1) 3. GLASTONBURY (8-1)

6. WEAVER (6-3): Weaver fell to an undefeated Bassick team on Saturday. The Beavers have five players averaging over eight points per game, and will need that depth as they prepare for a match up with East Catholic at the end of the month. LW: 8.

7. EAST HARTFORD (6-2): The Hornets split their week, with a win against Middletown and a loss to East Catholic. East Hartford’s only losses have come to Windsor and East Catholic, the area’s top teams. LW: 3.
