Some snow in forecast for later this week and MLK weekend
HARTFORD — Some snow may be headed our way later this week and again over the weekend.
The first chance for snow is on Thursday night into Friday morning, according to Gary Lessor, chief meteorologist at the Western Connecticut State University Weather Center.
“It’s not going to be all snow,” he said.
Some parts of the state will have snow, but others, especially in the southern half, will have a wintry mix or rain.
There’s a possibility of up to 2 inches of snow and sleet, Lessor said, although it’s too early to predict precise accumulations.
Fast-forward to Saturday night, when a storm will start with snow, although “it looks like it’s going to transition to rain for most of the state, if not all of the state, until Sunday morning,” when it could turn back to snow, Lessor said.
Saturday’s snow may begin in the afternoon, the National Weather Service said. The weather service put the chance for precipitation overnight Saturday to Sunday at 90 percent, calling for snow and sleet before 4 a.m. Sunday.
The chance of precipitation Thursday night into Friday was 70 percent as of early Tuesday after- noon, the service said.
Lessor said, there is a possibility that cold air may arrive and turn the rain back to snow later on Sunday. It was still too early Tuesday to predict how much snow may accumulate this weekend, Lessor said.
The temperatures Thursday through Sunday are expected to be in the 20s and 30s, the weather service said.
But, starting Monday, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the temperatures will get even lower. The high temperature will drop to the upper teens and low 20s, with nighttime lows in the single digits, Lessor said.
The temperature at Bradley International Airport already hit 12 degrees twice this month, Lessor said.
