A New Haven man shot by police last week was charged with illegal gun possession Tuesday after he was released from a city hospital, state police said.

Marcus Rivera, 22, of New Haven, had been recovering from a bullet to the pelvis area after a foot chase Jan. 8 turned into an exchange of gunfire.

The incident started about 5:45 p.m. that night on Lamberton Street when an undercover New Haven officer spotted Rivera, who was wanted on an active arrest warrant, state police said.

Officers chased Rivera and eventually grabbed him, but he was able to get free, and in a subsequent chase, he and the officers exchanged gunfire in the area of Greenwich Street, state police said.

Officers were able to take Rivera into custody on First Avenue, and reported that he had a gunshot wound to the pelvis. Rivera was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital, where he remained until Tuesday morning.

Once he was discharged from the hospital, Rivera was taken into custody by state police detectives, who charged him with carrying a pistol without a permit. State police said additional charges are pending.

The officer who reportedly shot Rivera was identified by New Haven police as Detective Francisco Sanchez, a seven-year veteran of the department. Sanchez has not been charged. No officers were injured in the incident.

“This was a very dangerous situation, and the outcome was as favorable as possible,” New Haven Chief Anthony Campbell said during a news conference last week.

State police said the investigation into the shooting remains ongoing.
