Costanzo out as Xavier High hockey coach
First-year Xavier High hockey coach Nick Costanzo has been removed just 10 games into the season, the Middletown school announced in a release on Thursday. The Falcons fell to 2-8 after losing to Notre Dame-West Haven 2-1 in overtime on Wednesday night.
“Xavier High School thanks coach Costanzo for his work with the program,” the statement said. “Assistant coaches Kyle Heins and Rick Longobardi will take over as co-coaches for the remainder of the 2018-2019 season.”
Costanzo, who played and coached hockey at North Haven, was hired before the season to replace Dan DeConti, who stepped down after the end of the 2017-18 season to spend more time with his family. According to Matt Conyers, Xavier's director of communications, the program and coaching staff will be evaluated at the end of the season. Players were informed
at practice on Thursday.
Black Wolves celebrate anniversary
The New England Black Wolves of the National Lacrosse League will celebrate their fifth anniversary on Saturday with a game against the Georgia Swarm at 7 p.m. at Mohegan Sun Arena. The first 2,000 fans will receive an anniversary T-shirt. The Black Wolves are 2-1 on the season and are led by Reilly O'Connor's 11 goals and five assists.
CCSU athletes honored
Central Connecticut State women's soccer player Charlotte Maurer, volleyball player Madelyn Kaprelyan and Angie Rafter of the cross country team have been named Northeast Conference scholarathletes. Maurer posted a 3.64 GPA as a marketing major, Kaprelyn 3.50 in biomolecular sciences and Rafter 3.93 in English.
