Deadly officer-involved shooting remains under investigation
WINDHAM – A probe into the deadly shooting of a suspected carjacker who, officials say, opened fire on officers before and after a long chase continued Thursday.
Kyron Marcell Sands of Hartford was shot in the stomach amid an exchange of gunfire with authorities after they stopped a stolen car on Route 32 in Windham, state police said.
State police did not release information on the incident. The incident was being investigated by Central District Major Crime detectives and Middlesex State’s Attorney Michael Gailor was assigned to look into the use of deadly force, officials said.
The incident with Sands first started when officers in Norwich responded to an interrupted burglary. During a confrontation, state police said that Sands shot at officers in Norwich before stealing a car and fleeing.
They said the chase continued on I-395, where Sands was reportedly involved in a crash and may have stolen another car.
The chase ended on Route 32 in Windham when authorities used devices to immobilize the vehicle, state police said.
In a second bout of gunfire, Sands was shot, state police said. Officers reportedly attempted to render aid, but Sands died at the scene.
State police did not say how many rounds were fired during the exchange or identify the officer that shot Sands.
Norwich and Willimantic police were assisting state police detectives with the investigation.
