Hartford baseball eliminated

The Hartford baseball team was eliminated from the America East Conference tournament after a 10-5 loss to Binghamton in the Hawks’ second game of the day on Friday. After also losing to Binghamton in its opener on Wednesday, Hartford, the No. 6 seed, had bounced back with three straight wins, including 5-3 to eliminate No. 2 Albany earlier Friday. Zach Ardito had three RBI and Devin Kellogg two in the win over the Great Danes. But against host Binghamton, with a chance to advance to Saturday’s championsh­ip against Stony Brook, the Hawks’ run ended. After falling behind 7-2, Hartford (23-34) worked its way back to cut the lead to 7-5 but a three-run sixth by the Bearcats broke the game open. … The Central Connecticu­t State baseball team lost to top seed Bryant 3-1 on the second day of the Northeast Conference tournament at Dodd Stadium in Norwich. The No. 2 Blue Devils will face Wagner at noon on Saturday in an eliminatio­n game with the winner advancing to face Bryant at 4 p.m. Tyler Mattison improved his record to 9-1, pitching six innings allowing a run on five hits for the winners. TT Bowens had two hits and an RBI for CCSU. Stafford’s Jimmy Titus had two hits and a run scored for Bryant. … Eastern Connecticu­t State freshman catcher Matt Malcom has been named the d3baseball.com New England rookie of the year and earned a spot on the all-New England second team. Malcom hit .360 with a team-leading six home runs and 29 RBI.
