HARTFORD – Hartford’s human resources director Cherese Chery will be leaving her position next week after 15 months on the job, Mayor Luke Bronin said Monday in an email to the city council.

Chery’s last day will be July 5, before she leaves the city to pursue other opportunities, Bronin said, adding that he “will make an announcement about an acting human resources director in the near future.”

Chery was the third person to head the human resources department under Bronin. Henry Burgos, a holdover from former Mayor Pedro Segarra’s administration, resigned in January 2016, and his assistant director Debra Carabillo temporarily held down the job until Chery started work in March 2018.

She was making $156,800 per year, according to the city.

A graduate of Hartford Public Schools, she had been chief human resources officer at Norwalk Public Schools since 2016 and held the same role at New London Public Schools for four years before that.

She had also led human resources for the State Education Resource Center in Middletown and worked in human resources at Hartford Hospital after earning degrees from Fitchburg State University and New York Institute of Technology.

“Chery has helped us continue some of our major priorities, like strong public safety recruitment, as well as implement a variety of functional changes behind the scenes that will help serve us well going forward,” Bronin said in his email to the council, city Treasurer Adam Cloud and his chief of staff Thea Montanez.

“She also helped us better recognize the good work our employees do on a daily basis with initiatives like the employee newsletter. … We wish her every success as she moves on to another chapter,” Bronin said.
