New uniforms, new locker rooms, new recruits unveiled

- By Alex Putterman

Amid a chaotic week for UConn sports in general and UConn football in particular, Randy Edsall’s program unveiled a slew of shiny new things.

First came the uniforms, designed to evoke Edsall’s first tenure as coach. A video posted to social media Sunday showed several Huskies players modeling home and road models, both of which included “Block-C” helmets.

Next came the new locker rooms, funded by a donation from alumnus Chris Fraser. In various videos Monday, players gawked excitedly at their personalized terminals, and some thanked Fraser by name on Twitter.

“Want to give a special shoutout to the Fraser family for the new lockers,” safety Oneil Robinson tweeted. “They’re definitely wavy.”

Finally, new players. Edsall announced Monday that the Huskies will add safety Diamond Harrell and offensive lineman Andrew Torres-Silva. Harrell, a junior college transfer from Los Angeles Valley College, had already tweeted about his commitment to the Huskies before Edsall’s announcement, while TorresSilva, another JUCO transfer, from Cabrillo College in California, had not. Both players will be eligible to play in 2019, as will kicker Sean Young, who announced last week that he will join the UConn program.

In addition, UConn received its fifth 2020 commitment, when New Jersey defensive lineman Collin McCarthy tweeted that he had chosen the Huskies.

This round of good news arrived only a day or two after UConn football was launched into a state of uncertainty by the athletic department’s decision to join the Big East in most other sports. UConn could attempt to stay in the American Athletic Conference for football but will likely be forced to either join a lesser conference or play as an independent.
