Melendez, Perez spark victory; 4 Yard Goats named All-Stars

Manuel Melendez hit a run-scoring single in the seventh inning, and Arvicent Perez doubled and singled twice as the Hartford Yard Goats defeated the Bowie Baysox 3-2 on Monday night in Bowie, Md.

Perez scored on the play after he reached base with a single, advanced to second on an out and then went to third on a single by Melendez.

Hartford took a 2-0 lead when Melendez hit a solo home run in the first inning and Vance Vizcaino scored on a wild pitch in the third.

Bowie answered in the fourth inning when Carlos Perez hit a solo home run and Willy Yahn hit an RBI double.

Hartford righthande­r Brandon Gold (7-4) picked up a quality start and the win, allowing two runs and 10 hits in 6 1/3 innings.

The Baysox’s Marcos Molina (4-6) took the loss in the Eastern League game, giving up three runs and nine hits in six innings.

Mason McCoy singled three times for the Baysox. Carlos Perez homered and singled.

Four Yard Goats are All-Stars: Four Yard Goats have been selected for the Eastern League All-Star Game next month. Infielders Colton Welker and Alan Trejo, along with relief pitchers Logan Cozart and Alexander Guillen were named to Eastern Division team. The All-Star Game will take place July 10 at 7 p.m. at The Diamond in Richmond, Va.

Welker, a third baseman, is batting .272 with 19 doubles, one triple, eight home runs, 41 RBI and 27 runs scored in his first season with the Yard Goats. Trejo, a shortstop, is batting .272 with nine doubles, 11 home runs, 32 RBI and 21 runs scored in his first season with the Yard Goats. Cozart is 2-1 with five saves and a 1.80 ERA and leads the Eastern League with 29 appearance­s. Guillen is 2-1with a 0.92 ERA in 19 relief outings for the Yard Goats.
