7 children hospitalized for dehydration at summer camp carnival
NEWINGTON — Seven children were hospitalized and treated for dehydration after a sweltering morning at the Newington Summer Camp Carnival Day on Wednesday.
“Nobody is suffering from anything severe or life-threatening,” said Newington Police Department Sgt. Chris Perry.
About 900 children were at the event when some fell ill due to the heat and ultimately seven were transported to Connecticut Children’s for treatment, said Bill DeMaio, Newington superintendent of parks and recreation.
Police responded to the medical complaints of campers feeling faint and lightheaded, likely from dehydration and the extreme heat and humidity of the 97-degree heat index, Perry said.
Parks staff took several precautions Wednesday morning, including renting a record number of tents for the event, building a cooling misting tent and offering a water slide into the pool to help children stay cool, DeMaio said.
TORRINGTON — Police are investigating a deceased body of a white male in his 30s found floating in the Naugatuck River near Riverside Ave. in Torrington early Wednesday morning, Lieutenant Bart Barown III said.
The body was reported at 7:43 a.m. by a resident of Riverside Ave. who said they saw a torso and what looked like boots floating in the river, Barown said.
The Connecticut State Police Dive Team was called and the Avon police department’s drone was used to get aerial footage of the river, Barown said.
The body was found floating about 30 feet off shore. The identity of the body is unknown and the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office in Farmington is investigating the death, but there are no apparent signs of foul play, Barown said.
