Nonprofit set up to aid East Hartford public schools

Group hopes to engage alumni, community, other stakeholde­rs

EAST HARTFORD – A group of people described as “passionate about East Hartford public schools” has launched a nonprofit organizati­on dedicated to the success of local students.

The launch of the East Hartford Alumni Associatio­n and Education Foundation was announced Wednesday. The founding group came together about a year ago to brainstorm ways “to engage alumni, the community and other stakeholde­rs to support our students and schools,” according to a news release.

The group has developed three main areas of focus: Creating a network of alumni who are committed to local public schools; developing mentoring programs to foster students’ success; and raising money to support scholarshi­ps and innovative educationa­l programs in the district.

“We are extremely excited by the launch of the East Hartford Alumni Associatio­n and Education Foundation,” School Superinten­dent Nathan Quesnel said. “We are appreciati­ve of the work that our alums have already committed to make this happen and look forward to future engagement. EH Pride runs deep and we are so grateful for this opportunit­y.”

The organizati­on’s first-year goals include raising funds for five $1,000 scholarshi­ps for graduating students and launching an East Hartford Public Schools Hall of Fame to recognize students’ accomplish­ments.

The board of directors is inviting people to a Founders Reception on Oct. 24 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at The One Wood Pub Restaurant at the East Hartford Golf Club, 130 Long Hill St. The group is seeking donations at the following levels: Freshman, $20-$49; Sophomore, $50-$99; Junior, $100-$249; Senior, $250-$499; and Alumni, $500 and above.

The board of directors includes Beatrice Alicea, Jana Batty, Anne Belanger, Brittney Cavaliere, Jeffrey Currey, Candy Guastamach­io, AJ LaPlant, Maile Manliguis, Mackenzie Manning, Louise Rivard, Tim Reid, Rep. Jason Rojas D-East Hartford, Sarah Rojas, Amanda Singh, Awet Tsegai and Linda Yamamoto.
